How to Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag + Giveaway!

Graydon Cleansers | elodiebeautycom

1. Clean all makeup brushes

How long have your makeup brushes been sitting unwashed in your makeup bag? Dermatologists recommend that you clean your brushes daily. If that sounds like too much work, aim to clean makeup brushes at least once a week by using a gentle cleanser such as the Graydon Super Sensitive Face Foam. After washing, thoroughly rinse them, pat with a towel, and lay flat to dry over night.

In between washes, sanitize your brushes using alcohol, or disinfecting spray like the Graydon Germs Away Mist.

If you share your makeup, make sure to sanitize!

Did you know that makeup can harbour some pretty nasty critters, like bacteria, yeast, and mould (Psst. more reason to never leave makeup in warm, damp places!).

This CBC Marketplace report studied tester makeup in 4 different retailers. The results are enough to make you want to gag! The lab found 40 per cent of the samples had Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, and 28 per cent were growing mould.

It’s always a good idea not to share your makeup with others, but if you do, make sure to sanitize it between uses using a disinfecting spray or alcohol wipes.

2. Toss expired makeup

Despite that Wet n’ Wild eye shadow you’ve been holding on to since high school, makeup doesn’t last forever. In fact, old makeup can cause breakouts and infections. Pink eye anyone??

Use these general guidelines to know how long to keep your makeup:

  • Mascara: 3-6 months
  • Eyeliner: 6 months to 1 year
  • Liquid foundation: 6 months
  • Powder makeup (like blush, eyeshadow, and foundation): 1-2 years
  • Lipstick: 2 years

3. Wash your makeup bag

Bacteria loves warm, dark places with lots of “food” to keep it growing — making your makeup bag and all of it’s contents the perfect breeding ground! In addition to sanitizing and replacing old makeup items, it’s important to also regularly wash your makeup bag. This can be easily done by turning it inside out and throwing it in the washing machine, or hand washing it using a gentle cleanser like Graydon All Over Soap.

4. Switch to eco-friendly makeup brands

Use the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic database to see how your makeup rates. For products that contain toxic ingredients, consider swapping them out with cleaner, more eco-friendly options.
